I need to buy an EV tester in order to carry out all the required tests.

I'm just a little unsure about one or 2 things...

1. Is an EV tester the same as an EV test adaptor? These terms seem to be used interchangeably.

2. Does the EV tester actually do the tests or do you plug them into your MFT? I'm sure it's the latter, but I just want to be certain.

3. Are all EV testers compatible with all MFT's or do you have to buy one that works with your particular MFT? I have a megger 1731, could I use the kewtech EV tester for example?

Thanks in advance @Gavin John Hyde , oops, I mean thanks in advance everyone ?

In answer to your questions HHD, see below....

1. An EV tester would be the MFT. The test adaptor is the part you need, this creates a link between your MFT and the EV Charger.

2. Correct, it's the latter.

3. As far as I know you can use any test adaptor with any MFT. However, the only MFT I know of that does the 6mA DC test is the megger 1741+, I'm sure there must be others though.

? I rang 'tester' and spoke to Chris. Very helpful.

me thinks there is white room ready for you considering you asking the questions and given the answers .lol.

i should start an EV testing course!
All the adaptors you see such as the megger one and kewtech will test all ev chargers with exception of type 1 tethered units (these are largely obsolete as only old evs use these) you can get an adaptor in anycase for £50 to connect.
The test adaptor uses a type 2 lead this will fit any type 2 tethered or socketed charger.
Through this lead you can simulate charge states such as waiting for scheduled charge, start charge etc, you can also simulate a cp link or if used pp link fault which will stop a charge.
You connect your MFt to this via 3 leads or 3 pin plug lead and then can test rcds, do Zs, PFC, PSC etc...
The metrel adaptor will talk to the metrel MFt and do a few extra things but will still work with other mfts.

I paid £950 for my megger evse adaptor which came with both type 1 and type 2 leads. - the type 1 useful as a lot of the older chargers with type 1 leads now developing problems and have repaired quite a few.

To the letter of the regulations the ability to test the charge states and activate the contactor within the charger is a requirement under functional testing and some of the chargers can actually detect if you have even done the testing when installed, as they log a lot of info inside. I know of one guy on his niceic inspection who showed an ev charger and he didnt do the rcd testing!! when asked to get up the logs on the charger it showed when installed, and hey presto no RCD testing! got a telling off by the area engineer for that.

Should add I have a kewtech kt65DL MFT and the Megger EVSE adaptor

To be fair there is little between the megger and kewtech evse test adaptors...
Megger were on the scene first so bought that rather than the kewtech. I think the kewtech is a bit smaller but otherwise do exactly the same.
The megger.does come with the type 1 lead which as i said earlier is good if servicing or testing older chargers.

In terms of MFT i did look at the new.megger but got such a good deal on the kt66dl in rexel it was a no brainer for me. He checked online and beat everybody on price. Like it. Nice and easy to use with some good ev testing features

Thanks for that! I did look at some of the other testers on the market before I bought the Megger, but having had the 1553 for over 12 years and it never letting me down I opted for them again!

The Kewtech KT66DL also does 6mA DC test. Tried it the other day during fault finding. Think i paid £250 for their adaptor unit.

Thats one of the good features as you can record that on the test sheet, i include images of the tester screen on my certs now as the kt66dl has the time date in top corner so all shows a paper trail so to speak.

I'll pay you £100 for that link! ?
Cheapest I have seen of late if alert electrical at £390 but at that price you may aswell get the megger one and get the type 1 lead aswell. I paid £410 inc vat about a year ago for mine. they aint cheap but i use it on around 755 of my jobs so it is essential like the mft.
Your best bet is to speak to your supplier and try wrangle a good deal on the back of another big order.

Just to make you laugh Gavin. i still haven't been paid a penny for the 2 claims i have made. First one was in June, second in August. The August one has just been declined due to something or other that i don't even understand and I need to resubmit.
I can safely say I will no longer be offering the grant to any EV customers. I genuinely take my hat off to you for having such a good system in place to deal with the grant.
Roll on March!?

@HappyHippyDad and
None of the customers I have fitted EV Chargers for have been the least bit interested in the grant!

That is definitely the way forward for me.
This last email from OZEV was the proverbial straw!
Just the mere thought of trying to explain what they wanted gets me confused.
I have never experienced such a convoluted process and so poorly run. I didn't think it existed!

Megger had/has a recall on thier EVSE units (likely already been covered but a repost can't hurt)

That they did and mine was returned. To be fair to Megger, they realized there was a problem and issued a recall, they paid for the return, it was away for about 3 days and sent back! I really can't complain about the services.
Ok I agree it shouldn't have had to be sent back in the first place but at least they were efficient in doing the repairs and sending it back!
