Hi to anybody reading...At the age of 31 i have decided that i would like to retrain to become a fully qualified electrician and i am seeking some advice on the best possible route for me to take.

My question is...Would i be better off biting the bullet and trying to get an apprenticeship?

or

Would it be worth me completing an electrical course and then trying to get a job as a mate or an improver and getting fully qualified this way?

The course i am looking at is 16 weeks long with trade skills for you and on completion would give me a c&g 2365 level 2 and 3 full diploma.

If it makes any difference my background is 4 years experience as a general dogs body for a building firm followed by 5 years in the royal navy as a marine engineering technician and more recently i have spent the past 4 years contracting as a health and safety technician for bae systems (as and when they need me)

Any advice is greatly appreciated

If you caan afford to become an apprentice with a company that is prepared to train you across a range of different skills then I would definitely go for that option. but then we're back in the 60's and 70's.
You have in your favour the RN experience and discipline plus H&S training.
Its a hard or easy path, depending on some lucky breaks I can't suggest anything more.....

the 2365 levels 2 and 3 are your core quals. as a good start. your problem is funding the cost and time if you need to keep working topay the bills.
