hi, I'm a bored ,retired sparks, have been asked to do part time testing, I have the pat cert but never took the 2391, before I retired i was allowed to test under the "qualified by experience" is this still permited or do I have to take the exam? the cost is the only reason i ask, thanks in anticipation, tony

Tony welcome to the forum. The 2391 is proof of competence but and is recognized within the industry as such.

There are many sparks out there that do not have this qualification quite happily testing installations and are competent, so not having it shouldn't be a problem

It depends though, on who is asking you to do these tests, and are they happy you haven't got the 2391 qualifications

Welcome tony.

You don't need the 2391 to T&I and cert. The 2391 shows that you are 'competent' to carry out such work. If you have the (up to date) knowledge and skills to test then go for it but some landlords, councils, insurance companies do require the 2391 so need to make sure first.

thanks to all replies, before retirment, i was happily testing but I did'nt know if the regs had changed, I may take on the part time testing with a view to do the exam if it works out. many thanks, tony

Tony,

I know you are not stupid, but don't forget to get insured.

Cheers........Howard

Hello Tony, i suspect you may know most of whats required as regards the doing bit of the exam, i'd focus on the 'understanding whats being asked for' hints & tips, and all the other little traps they lay for you! One of the reasons its a 'hard' exam is because they're really really picky with things like names of meters, getting upper & lower cases right on symbols. You're prob thinking "well why shouldnt they be" & I agree with you. I like pernickerty. Part of the job!

Ps what cost you been quoted? There are some low prices bandied on here, i thought I was winner at £260, 10 weeks night school and both exams but have seen lower (i=p/u, was that thee?)

S.

You'll have a job getting onto the 2391 as the closing date for entrys was December 2011, the qualification has now changed and is split into two seperate qualifications the "2394 and the "2395", there is a thread about it all somewhere titled appropriatly "Goodbye 2391"

I expect the biggest change will be the forms we now use for periodic inspection reporting, now called an electrical installation condition report.

There are model forms in the latest edition of the wiring regs.

hi this may sound a silly question but do you need to redo the 2391? is there a time scale in which it should be re sat ?

IMO the new EICR forms are easier to fill out, everything in sections and you can check it off as you go, only 3 codes to choose from tho so more of a judgment needed about what constitutes a C2 over a C3, obviously a C1 needs dorting there and then.

i find it easier that its spelled out to you.... now were back to deskilling
