I'm thinking that I might have to bite the bullet and join a scam and start to advertise. Work is tailing off a little and I'm starting to think about getting the diary filled up as much as possible, one of the things I'll have to come up with is a "hook" line which will make me stand out from all the other local sparks, which there's not that many of really. They all seem to say the same things in their ads "time served" "part p registered" etc etc, the same old stuff just regurgitated over and over again. So thinking about it tonight I came up with a simple, fairly hard hitting slogan which is
"(business name) For when you want the job done properly/right"
Now what I don't want to do is **** the other local sparks off by implying that they're not doing it right because there's always the chance of some work being passed around if someone is too busy and if I've annoyed someone they're not going to ring me, but on the other hand if I get a call from a client that they don't then that's not my problem.
Opinions please guys

You're talking about yourself not them. Nothing wrong with telling the truth, IMO.

I would say that is fine, the people it will annoy are those that do not do it right!
As ipf says you are talking about yourself not saying "if you want to avoid a poor installation call me, there are no cowboys here" might be more controversial!

From Trev’s you get a professional installation first time, every time.

For electrical installation as it should be, call Trev’s.

I spoke to someone the other day who owns multiple business and he said NEVER NEVER NEVER put the word CHEAP, CHEAPER, CHEAPEST in an add, he said they make you sound like your cheap or you use crappy cheap equipment etc

I'm not keen on competition by price, ok i won't win every job as there'll always be someone cheaper but quality is the selling thing imho. Don't want to put price ideas in people's heads when they see the ad.

I've grown up in sales, Family business and I've always hated the word cheap. When a customer says to me "oooo that's cheap" my reply??

"we're not cheap, we're value for money"

Trev as its been said by Durham just tell the truth. You can't pee someone off by telling the truth! Some might not like it, but that's their problem, not yours. And you've got to do what's best for you matey!

Hope the " hook" works out for you like.

I'm sure small businesses have been promoting themselves with lines like 'you've tried the rest now try the best' for years.
I see what you're saying though - you don't want to inadvertently put potential customers off the trade altogether by saying stuff like "Unlike all other electricians we're not t***s" or Trev's Electrical "we reckon we're all that".

There's a recruitment agency who have got an advert on local radio; their tagline seems to be 'we are different' which is all good and well but they don't explain how they are different. I would want a recruitment agency to find workers or find me a job, not 'something different'.

the best way to stand out is your van, doesnt have to new or nearly new,get one of those wrap around sign writing things done it covers all the van and some of these lads can do some great stuff so you get noticed, then its a new pair of walking boots and some leaflets like ds,you could go as far as them vans with the big screwdriver on the roof,id never heard of them but i now know they fix appliances

there's a company in wrexham who have printed on their vans: Don't get the blues, we'll mend your fuse

Advertising is such a hard thing....too little 'sell' and it's a pointless waste of time, too much and it's just corny. But as others have said, you're not in business to promote others, you're in it to promote YOU. The only thing the competitition will be narked with is just that they didn't think of that killer tagline instead.

Trev's. Do it right.

trev,
you dont need slogans etc you need to advertise and advertise in quantity you need to let people know about you and you only drum it into them they wont need another spark but only you so who they gonna call?? trev trev trev trev lol

How about a TV ad?

Go Trev-oooooooor, go trev-ooooooooooor, Go trevor go trevor go trev-oooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Gooooooo Treeeeeeeevvvvvvvooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Has bit of a ring to it wouldn't you agree? I wonder how it would COMPARE to the others around you rofl :)

:thumbsup

Sedgy I agree however, I want to make my ad different. Yes I'm time served, yes I have almost 30 years experience, yes I give a professional service but putting all that in will just make mine the same as everybody else's. So if I can sum all that up in one line don't you think that would be better?

I saw a post somewhere where an electrician had advertised "Let us remove your shorts"

With thanks to our Scottish Brethren - "The hottest service in town - sorting your shorts better than Daz!"

[not a serious suggestion, btw!]
