Went to install a speech dialer to an existing alarm today and found the whole thing was wired in telephone cable! I know this isn't good practise but is it ok?

just bad practice. telephone cable is solid single strand and liable to fracture at the terminations. other than that, it's OK.

Not great but the cable can cope with the demand of the job.

Out of spite did you wire the dialer in alarm cable? That would really confuse the next person to work on the system..........

Lol yeah I ran an alarm cable! , it's a right mix and match spotted a few cat 6 in there aswell! Have you guys fitted speech diallers? I wired it with the trigger the -v off the bell

yes it is unless the alarm needs to comply via insurance to Nacoss, then things get a bit complecated.
