hi chaps, i have recently installed a hot tub which consists of a supply from main db running to an ip rated dist board which is located out side which contains an RCD and an mcb through a rotary swich supplying the hot tub, they are now asking me to fit a timer to the circuit so the the hot tub is not running all the time, i would like to get one that i can fit in the outside DB but cant seem to find one, can anyone point me in the right direction? as allays money is an issue so need the most affordable circuit possible.

thanks in advance

Usually a timer would be installed as part of the hot tub controls. It could get a bit bulky cause you might need a contactor as well especially if the load is over 10Amps. The pump is an AC3 load so I would read the spec of the timer contacts carefully, if they only give an AC1 load spec then work on 50-60% of that.

here one http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=single%20mondule%20din%20rail%20time%20clock&source=web&cd=3&ved=0CGsQFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.timeguard.com%2Fproducts%2Ftime%2Ftheben-din-rail-timeswitches%2F24hr-7-day-single-channel-1-module-16a-digital-timeswitch&ei=MbnXTor7JdCi8gPn-Jz9DQ&usg=AFQjCNHK16iglWs_ZlwAj7XfMtoFrrzrrA the only problem you will have is you'll need an additional contactor because the majority of the single modual time clocks are relativly low current 16 amps or there abouts , thats me asuming the the consumer unit is a 2 way plus RCD you have installed

Do you not have the hot tub installation and operation manual(s)?? This will also give you the various specifications and wiring diagram(s) for the various components incorporated within the hot tub.
I'm sure if you read these specifications, you would have found that all modern units have inbuilt RCD protection as standard. I'm pretty sure, as has been already suggested they will also incorporate a timer....

I haven't seen a Jacuzzi or hot tub for some years now, that doesn't have inbuilt RCD protection, so you may find you also have a discrimination problem too. Even if it's a USA/Canadian unit that use 6mA protection modules. The chances are, a leakage fault will trip both the inbuilt RCD(s) and your 30mA supply RCD...

some good points there, i cant seem to find a timer greater than 16amps, there is defiantly not room for a contractor, the controls are very basic and dont think there is a built in timer i will check anyway

The hottub I have has controls by "Balboa" which are a very common control set on hottubs. The controls can be programed for different filter cycles 2,4,6 or 8Hrs and also economy mode (heater only runs on filter cycles), standard mode (heater can activate pump independant of filter cycle). The filter cycles operate every 12hrs. Hope this helps.
