So it's time to upgrade from my old 24v green bosch with it's tired NiCd batteries to something thats gonna take a lot of stick and last a good few years. Im definately after Li-ion batteries, 2 of, and a good solid construction for a max of £250.
Been looking at these ones
makita bhp451
DeWalt dcd925
DeWalt dcd985

Does anyone have any experience with these drills ?
What others do people recommend ?

Any help would be great thanks guys.

Thanks, I'll check that out. Looks good spec for the price. I always had the idea that milwaukee were megabucks.

I've got the makita, came with an impact drill as well. would recommend it

I've got a load of Makita kit including a 451. It's a daddy that is! Very powerful - just be careful with all that torque in first gear, if it snags it'll snap your wrists.

I used to have the 451. It took a shed load of abuse, dropped from all sorts of heights, treated in ways it really shouldnt have been treated, and it just kept going. Then I dropped it from 3rd tier of scaffold tower and it got stuck in reverse, opened it up and bits sort of just fell out... so I flogged it as a 'Spares & Repairs'. Purchased a nice shiny Bosch GSB 18-2-Li as it was on a great offer, what a load of turd that thing is. Then had a gander at the DeWalt and was rather impressed with the new Li-Ion DCD785L2-GB. But it just isn't a Makita... So I ended up getting another 451.

Thanks for the advice guys. Think i will go for the Makita. Found it with 2 batteries, charger, circular saw and toolbag for £330 which seems a good deal.

Has to be the dewalt

I got one when i was an apprentice, used it day in day out for around 9-10 years and it never missed a beat

Upgraded recently to a newer one ONLY as it was on offer in screwfix, down from £300 to £149, lithium ion

Still got the old one and use it in the garage,

Infact all my tools are dewalt and would recommend highly, the only makita thing i own is a DAB radio as admittidly they sound a little better than the Dewalts

Some of the other lads i work with use makita, i could never get away with it, the dewalts always felt better built and just had a touch more power in them

Got the Metabo as well after the Makita 451 died ( both batts died , gearbox failed and lost the hammer action).
Metabo plus 2 x batts 100nm torque and 3 year warranty INCLUDING batts and charger all for £250 inc VAT and P&P.
Deffo very solid build quality.

Cheers,
Lofty.
p.s. Thanks to 'Amp David' for putting me onto Metabo

Hi Andy,
It's a good bit of kit and it's still at that price from the supplier I used. Register it online to get the 3 yr warranty.
Plus should you need to it can do 50mm in wood.

Metabo are also bringing out 4Ah batts soon.

Cheers,
Lofty.

Checkout the Panasonic 21v range.ive had one for about 2 years n the build quality and batteries are great.i had the makita mxt combi before that which was a Great drill with loads of torque.batteries gave up the ghost on that one
