I think you would be better sourcing a 230v hydraulic unit it probably would be cheaper in the long run

Quite likely. And easier to use all round.

lol

yeah a bought this unit quite cheap without having a good look i was hoping the motor

would be 240v

but it has turned out it isnt...

the unit was the

spool valve
piping
hydro tank
hydro pump
and 12v electric motor

i was hoping i could run it from my generator as it has a 12v output but its only rated to 8.2 amps

which likely wouldn't be enough to power it...

I can pretty much guarantee this motor will draw way more than 8Amps. If you connect it to your generator 12v output you'll either cause the protection to trip or damage the generator. I'd strongly advise against even trying the genny, stick with a battery.

so can you buy such a device that converters 240v to 12vdc 50/60amp ?

what would you say the wattage is on the motor ?

thanks

You're not taking this in are you? We don't know what the rating of the motor is, and we don't know how much current it will draw when used in your particular application. It will need testing, as I said previously. If you don't have the means to do this yourself, you may need to find an electrician (perhaps an automotive-electrician) who has a suitable DC ammeter, to test it for you.

Yes, you can buy a 12V 60A DC power supply:
Buy Embedded Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) RSP1000 Series SMPSU, 12V 60A RS RSP-1000-12 online from RS for next day delivery.

I'm not saying that this particular one is suitable for your purpose.

There are no electrical specifications on that listing (except for 12V).
Try sourcing a 230V motor with the same shaft and mounting to directly replace your existing 12V motor, should be around £150, cheaper than a high current power supply, but more expensive than 2 12V batteries and battery charger.

Do you ever get the feeling that you're just farting against thunder here??? :rolleyes4:

You will not get ANY kind of duty cycle with the set up your suggesting. If i had read "log splitting" earlier,i would have said not to bother. Any mains powered hydraulic unit will have a return circuit for cooling, and open centre proportional valving to ensure you get two hours of fun...put it back on ebay and let someone else feel disappointed.

so what are theys unit made for then if there no good to run a ram in and out for a couple of hours ??

It is probably a generic tipper pump unit, relatively low pressure, low flow and very intermittent use,off the likes of a transit or similar. Any decent log splitter will require 180 Bar,75% + duty cycle and sufficient Lpm to stroke a fair capacity ram its cycle quickly. There are some good engine driven yokes about and i have made several over the years. If you have anything plant-like,you could drive one via SS couplings off an auxillary circuit,as on a tractor, stacker or beaver type power pack. Me pal has a german creation that cost five figures and is directly driven off a large John Deere tractor, but it splits logs up to 3ft long in to staves, then will cut those as short as you like. If you are splitting for your own log burner (my folks have one),then you may have to accept that the cost of kit like a chainsaw, splitter etc,is the bit no-one mentions during the start of the job. Don't be annoyed if the thing you have turns out a non-starter,before i met my lovely missus,i had a rake of pretty girlfriends who turned out needing help to cross a road...

Here is a couple of images of the unit i have bought

this image is with the motor removed.

so use dont reckon this will be have enough power to run a ram to

split logs.....

Only replying because your pictures are so good! That looks like a fabricated unit, possibly for a pipe crimper or similar, the functioning spool is set up for a single acting cylinder (spring or gravity return),whilst the double acting spool is blanked. It will be low flow/duty due to its power source,a single or banked 12V source. I have used an almost identical rig for a vehicle mounted spectacle lift where the lift cylinder was single acting and the spare spool actioned the extension cylinder. All it will do for you my friend,is give you a splitting headache......see what i did there....:smile5:

hello

thank you for your response so you don't reckon this unit is any good at all for making a log

splitter with ?

i was hoping to just buy other pipe rig it up to the blank plate

and buy a ram and it would work fine...

here are some more picture of the setup

Forget trying to make logsplitters and take up photography instead. ;)
