Please can you give your opinions on this yesterday when testing found the socket ring earths connected to back of box and a fly lead to the socket mcbs are 60898 type b

used to be obligatory on back boxes with only 1 fixed lug. done away with around 2003, back on the 16th. still good practice though. it's optional, according to regs.

I think the point Hester was making was putting the two ring conductors in the back box, instead of in the socket terminals with a flylead to the back box. I prefer them in the socket itself, otherwise you are reducing the CSA of the CPC to the socket (1x1.5 instead of 2x1.5).

ah. re-read OP. sounds like that may be the case. bad practice IMO, the cpc's should go to the socket , then a fly lead to the box ( if wanted ).

I'm not sure that applies, the circuit is still 2x1.5, it's just the individual socket would be on 1x1.5 - like a spur.
Re original Q, CPCs into the socket - end of!

Leave one end of your ring cable a lot longer, take your cpc and sleeve half of it, fold it without cutting it and terminate that fold in the back box. Sleeve the rest and into the socket with the other end. :icon4:

I have always believed, and I'm sure that I've read somewhere, that earths should go directly to the accessory, and an earth tail between the back box and the accessory is only required if the incoming/outgoing earth is a gland connection to the back-box, or the back box does not have at least one fixed lug with the accessory fixing screw holes strapped together.
It may be another one of those regulation myths though.

Hi all thanks for your answers what i wanted to know was is that piece of earth undersize or does it still meet regs

We always use a flexible 2.5mm stranded fly lead between the accessory and the back box. But then we have a minimum cable size on this project (and most of the other projects i've been on) of 4mm for power circuits.

Csa of the cable is sufficient to meet the regulations for a socket outlet, not good practice but frequently seen.
