I normally work outside the UK and am classed as a non resident for tax purposes ie in UK for less than 91 days per year for the last 4 tax years.
I work for a UK employer and the only time i pay UK tax is for work carried out in the UK which is generally only about 6 weeks per year.

I am currently working in UK on a 5 month contract and am paying UK income tax.

Does anyone know the current rates of UK tax as i thought it was 20% upto earnings of £37,400 but i seem to be getting taxed alot higher but not at the higher rate of 40% it's working out at about 32% however they are working it out.
Our accounts dept are checking into it also but i just thought some of you guys might know.

Yes it is 20% up to £37,400

You may be on emergency tax, so could have a tax code that is making you pay back an underpayment in the past.

Don't forget that you will also have stamp deducted from your salary as well as tax in the UK. If you go to http://www.msn.co.ukMSN they have a very good wage slip checker here.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

I have a tax code 649L so not on an emergency one also have stamp detucted but the rates for this seem ok.

Well if that's your tax code and you are sure your calculations are correct then it must be a mistake in the wages dept. Check your pay slip on the salary checker and if that confirms your calculation get on to them to sort it out.

Good Luck.
:)

Just a note my other half was being overcharged tax by her employer for 2 yeas !! We got it all back from him, I reckon he was skimming the wage slips as the overpayment never appeared on the P60 at the end of the year
