Hi all im 25 and changing careers to become an electrican, however its a minefield for courses that many to choose from. Due to financial reasons the only way i can do the course is by doing a part time course as i am luckly working volinterry work with a local electrican.

From new no previous experience what course do i start with? or any order? Basically want to become a domestic electrican but ideal work in a field of areas like cctv, rewire, lighting etc.

Many Thanks

I would suggest that you look for the standard foundation courses, not sure what they are called nowadays, mine was the 2360 certificate in electrical installation or similar.
Idealy you want a course which also offers the NVQ3 and 17th edition.

2365 level 2 to start, progress on to level 3 2365 then do the bridging units, your portfolio and AM2 to convert in to an NVQ level 3. With these qualifications you would be graded by the JIB as an electrician. With a few years experience under your belt after qualifying then I would look at doing the 2394/2395 test and inspection qualification, this would let you be graded as approved.

Yes you will probably be able to find a college who does an evening course once or twice a week.

Whats your opinion on the 15 non consecutive day trainning centres? Some electricans i have spoke to have sid their no good which makes me wounder why trainning centres sell the courses. Im currently doing volinterry work work with an electrican but at this moment in time cant take me on due to 3 months into him starting a new business. However he is allowing me to go out and help him on jobs. So doing a trainning centre spread over a year and working with him will that get me anywere?

Thanks

That’s sound advice thank you so much. Yeah its kinds of a strange work relationship. I served him at my current retail job and after having a good talk with him he kindly said anytime you off/free from work you can come out on any jobs with me to learn and get the experience. And that if i got into a course i can still do the same with him. But because at this moment in time he can’t take me on i have to work in retail still to live, while learning the trade and go onsite. So which do you think is my best option? Still the intensive year course 2365? He told me that in a year or two circumstances may change and he may be able to take me on and by then i will have been learning for two years.

I really want to get out of the retailing industry and love every minute of electrical work and really want this as a career.

May have to be option 1 as the course looks expensive around 7k. And don’t have enough disposable income to support myself through just a course with no guarantee of a job after it.

i'd say the 2365 level 2 then 3, 2 evenings a week is your best option.
