Had a call from a customer during the week.
He'd bought a small ribbon cutting machine from China and was confused about wiring it.
The instruction book and DVD manual said to install the "ground" lead (which was a 1.5mm single supplied), the power cable was a 2 pin european style lead.
The customer had a lead to replace it with a UK three pin 13 amp plug, earth connected, I tested it.
I tested from the "grounding" point on the machine body to the earth pin on it's socket and got a reading of 0.1 ohms.
I plugged the replacement power lead in to the machine and supply socket, then tested between the "grounding" point on the machine and the earthed face plate screws of the socket got a reading of 0.1 ohms.

So metal body of the machine is earthed to cover fault condition, so no need to run a seperate earth IMHO.
Just thought I'd ask you guys if you have any thoughts on this, maybe I should have installed the extra earth?

Thanks in advance.
Steve.

as long as you get that 0.1. ohms reading, it's fine.

the reason for the extra lead is simple:

2 pin sockets are very common in china/asia so they supply an earth lead to provide a permanent earth.

If you are running from a three pin there is no need for this lead.
