Hello guys, the time has come to invest in a tester.

The plans to buy one and pretend I'm doing a job for someome when in actual fact im just going to be practicing a full inspection and test in the house I'm in.

I need to get some sort of practice in even if I've got to teach myself with the book I cant just sit here waiting for he college to possibly get back to me.

I've got access to test a few friends places as well so I think it's a good investment in the long run.

I just wondered what most of the electricians on here would recommend as a good first buy for me would be.

I plan to put it to work as much as I can at some point down the line so hopefully it will pay itself off

personally ,I'm a Megger tart, but there are more cost effective solutions, e.g the kewtech range. have a look on ebay for something calibrated from a high profile seller. get something decent for £250 -£300.

Build yourself a rig, I wouldn't be using real properties as a learning curve until I've got it nailed, you can still add resistors and power to a test rig.

I went for the 1730 as it did everything I need for domestic (Inc Re testing for those rocking horse excrement occasions where I'd need a rod in and want to confirm I've got enough Terra resistance) but also dips the toes in to commercial and industrial (AC A B S TD RCDs, 3PH functions (phase rotation & PFC between phases) and optional current clamp functionality (interesting but can't justify the cost of the IClamp add-on).

It's served me well so far. Got me through college and gives me a tool to master as one of the foundation diagnostic tools we use as electricians, £450 I think mine cost me, £200 for firmware upgrade, calibration and new leads from Calibration Center (a lot cheaper than Megger directly)
