Working in a 2 bed terrace and been asked to do a pir, the continuity on the downstairs ring final is confusing me and wondered if one of you chaps with a fresh pair of eyes could help me out. End to end continuity of Rn is open end to end of R2 is open but I'm getting a low fluctuating reading for R1. I've narrowed it down to 2 sockets which appear to be both the start and the other the end of the ring final and it's between these two sockets where I'm getting these readings. The wiring was done by professional type diyer fate a fire in the property a few years ago and the owner suspect not all the wires wire replaced. I could split the ring but can't guarantee this will completely separate the 2 circuits due to the reading or do I give it a grade 3 ( needs further investigation) and issue a satisfactory pir? Help!! Cheers:confused:

you could split the ring and have 2 radials, 16A MCB for each. this would comply and would not need a code at all.

if you split the ring that will go away. or, investigate further to trace and rectify the fault. you're the man on site, it's your call.

Are you sure it is a ring? If so then go round and check all the sockets for loose connections. If that doesn't fix it, then do the R1+RN check at every outlet, and R1+R2 at every outlet, this will help you find the break. And if all else fails you will have to split the circuit up and go wire to wire between outlets to find the problem. As you are doing a PIR, then i assume you are not there to fix it. I would personally give it a code 1 if you are sure it is a ring. you can't give it a satifactory because it isn't. Some remedial work is required, and overall condition, unsatisfactory.

As far as I am aware you can only give a satisfactory if it was done prior to 17th edition and everything is done to the regs current at the time of the installation, so you would only have code 4's doesnt meet BS7671:2008, and there are no "X" on the schedule of inspections.

Put it on a 20 amp mcb, but obviously rectification bis the best solution

if you narrowed it down to the two sockets remove the cable between them and change them to radials or run new cable between to reinstate the ring, running a temp cable between the two and retesting will prove if youre correct.

i second that dont just put on 2 radials as its a ring for a reason ! either fix it or code 1 it - my 1st question to the customer will be ...
have you had any work done in the last few years electrical or not and start there !
