how do i check to see if a capacitor has died?

Charge it up and throw it at the apprentice. If he yelps it's working fine

Depends on what type, on electrolytic types and using a AVO (analogue meter) when you connect the probes to the capacitor, the needle used to flick to the other end of the scale and gradually return to zero as it was discharging through the AVO, other than that some DVM's have a capactiance function.
