............ which is also the reason why the condensate waste drain pipe is plastic and so is the flue.

I think it's best to plumb the condensate drain into a waste pipe or soil stack, but if it has to go into the ground it goes into a soak away stuffed full of limestone chippings. That neutralises the acid.

my sister just had a combi fitted and they just popped it thru the wall , dripping down the wall onto the ground outside , charged her an arm and a leg too

Problem with condenser outlet pipes is they can freeze solid in zero temps, then water backs up causing a fault on the boiler. bit of lagging outside would do the trick.

or a trace heater.

The problem with dropping a condensate drain into the ground is if limestone chippings aren,t used to neutralise the acid it can eat into the brickwork over time.

Then that contravenes the Manufacturer's Instructions and presents a risk to small children playing outside and pets too who may decide to take a drink from it.

There's probably a regulation or two that's been broken as well but just now I don't feel well enough to look for it.

I've always wondered if using one of these defeats the object of fitting these super efficient boilers in the first place ... I mean you're "wasting" electricity to heat water that you're throwing away.

It can be a problem if you run the entire length in overflow pipe which is about 22mm diameter. That's generally the size of the pipe that exits the boiler, but the "better educated" amongst us will immediately connect that into a 32mm - or even a 40mm - once it gets outside the building.

Run it in a downward direction as near to vertical as possible and tip it into a soil stack using a strap-on boss ... Ohh Missus!!!

I have never known one to freeze yet.

but look at the amount of energy that's wasted installing solar panels.. scaffolders time and energy + wagon fuel. roofers ditto, sparks ditto. all the energy utilised by the suits in their plush, warm, well lit offices writing the rules and processing the FIT tariffs. need i go on?

must be the fumes from your curry dumps transferred into the soil pipe keep the condensate pipe warm.
