I've got my practical exam on wednesday and was just wondering when testing a ring main should you always cross connect R1 to RN before doing R1 to R2?. Is there a set sequance.

So far i have

Continuity of cpc and main earthing conductors

Continuity of ring
End to end
Cross connect R1 to RN
Cross connect R1 to R2

Insulation Resistance

Polarity Dead

in detail i do the same too....
I DO ..
r1
rn
r2
end to end.
then,
figure 8 or cross connect
l1+n2 and l2+n1
then check eachsocket
l1+e2 and l2+e1
then at each socket
n1+e2 and n2+e1
then at each socket.
polaritys checked and ticked of list, also ring as you shouldnt see interconections or daisy chains-spur off spur off spur
etc

When your checking continuity of your cpc on a lighting and radial circuit as well as linking R1 and R2 would you link R1 and RN to confirm polairty?

no,just R1+R2, flicking switch proves polarity,, when i do my R1 + R2 of radials like light circuit or shower etc
i link them together at the fuse board.
then i use my leads on the (switch live) an earth at the lamp for example.
then you should get a reading , then flick the switch and the reading should show open cicuit as youv just turned it off and vise verser. always do switch live and earth /r1 r2.

wen the switch is flicked on /off youl get a change of reading this proves polarity as the live goes through the switch. AS YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE NEUTRAL GOING THROUGH THE SWITCH>ONLY LIVE>

unless its a big double pole switch like shower or something alike then itl switch both live and neutral but the theorys the same for switching on /off> gives a reading if on ,no reading/open circuit if off

If thers more than 1 switch like in two way lighting switch them both in sequance asto prove polarity on both switchs then use the highest of two readings to record, two readings cus one switch will be further away and have higher resistance
