Brian, DIY but 30-year commercial/industrial master HVAC tech.

I have installed an emergency whole-house breaker switch next to my service meter. This will now be the main panel and I have subsequently tied my two grounds from grounding rods into the new panel.

The the original main panel is now a sub-panel. I have separated the neutral and ground. I have the four wires tied into it. Can I leave the original grounding wire attached to the box or can I only have the ground coming from the new main panel?

I am really just curious because it isn't hard to remove.

By code the first panel after the meter has to have 2 ground rods with # 6 bare wire going from the neutral bar to the first ground rod unbroken and then to the second rod. Any panel sub fed from your main panel has to have 4 wires pulled to it as you stated and keep all ground and neutrals separated as you stated also. You are also required by article 110-12 of the NEC to install ARCH flash stickers on both panels. Hope this helps and good job
