morning gents,

I tried to send away an RCD tester last week for repair as it wasn't powering up, but the repair company who are usually quite good say its flicked its last trip switch.

LUCKILY, they have quoted me £350 for a direct replacement, so my boss has now given me that as a limit to spend. I'm actually hoping for a semi-decent multifunction tester (rcd, loop, insul) for around that price, i have always had the 3 separate instruments previously. I've found one for £260 (plus VAT) by Kewtech, but i've not really used them before? seems too good a good deal??

has anyone any experience of them? surely as long as they its doing the job and calibrated each year, you can't ask more than that? Open to suggestions, however, £350(plus VAT) would be the definite limit.

look for a used megger 1552/3. some on ebay.

Thanks. I suggested second hand and he gave me the look, and when i suggested ebay, he looked at me as if i'd **** on the carpet. I found this...[h=1]Megger MFT1710 Multifunction Tester[/h]for £460, and currently trying to talk him into it, but its not going so well.

get a 1552 for half the price. does all you need. problem with a 1710 is it might have the old version of software.

I use the Kewtech KT65 MFT's for my 2394/5 courses. Cracking piece of kit for the money, and very easy to use, and it does everything. I got our 2 from the forum sponsor Test-meter.co.uk, speak to Lasse, in the sales dept.

Cheers………….Howard.

I just cannot understand why a ''company'' would even think about scrimping on needed/required test kit??

the "company" isn't scrimping on the test kit, they are allowing me £350 to replace a bust RCD tester. My question was can i get a decent multifunction tester for that price, and if anyone had used or heard of the brand Kewtech.

well...here`s the lowdown on the 1710:

  • Insulation testing at 250V and 500V
  • 200mA Continuity test
  • 2-wire no-trip & high current loop testing
  • Polarity test
  • RCD ramp test
  • Auto-start tests on continuity and loop resistance – no need to push the button
  • Dual display shows loop resistance and fault current results simultaneously
  • Dual test buttons for left or right-handed operation
  • Test lockout
  • Safe contact detector
  • Live circuit warning
  • Auto discharge
  • Analogue arc display
  • Weatherproof to IP54
  • Input protection against accidental connection to live circuits
  • CAT IV 300V safety standard
as i suspected theres no automatic RCD testing....so get ready for plenty of trips up n down stairs...

no IR at either 100V or 1000V....

look, the 1720 is the better tester....

and it follows its the one most chosen by the small to medium operator....so incite the benefits and push for that ...if you can

Agree with the others, The megger 15xx is the way forward.
I brought mine second hand off ebay and its never missed a beat.

I have a metrel instaltest 61557....cost me....£70 something quid from ebay...could do with some new batteries and labelling that isn't as cryptic but it does everything I want it to, though no 100v IR, but does do 1000v IR...

Thats my opinion too OP, you may get one for 350

Nice sig there and TB is doing a good job and looks just GREAT in a string vest !!!

Bloody doctor said this thing is incurable, but we're fighting it cos I want to play with me new car & get some nice days away with TB in it.

Well as this is the company paying for this test equipment, i doubt very much if they would appricheate you buying on the second hand market.

Although i have nothing against KEWTECH, I would personally be looking at the METREL MFT MI3000 range...

But then again i prefer separate's test equipment, which is what is used for all our official testing certification /records. So it'll be the best separate RCD tester i could purchase for the money available!! lol!!

At least if you purchase through TestMeter the forum sponsor you get the 5% discount and on some products free delivery and a choice of 3 free gifts, (voltage tester, cal checkbox, wander lead adaptor) so can't get much better than that!! lol!!

I will not buy a megger for quite some time
i bought a LRCD tester 3 years ago and I have had nothing but problems with it

i eventually gave up and bought a FLUKE 1654B, excellent and reliable- never mussed a beat

The megger seemed to have a ribbon cable problem, which never seemed to get fixed

I have a Megger LRCD220 which had very intermittent high loop readings. After about three tries at soldering suspect solder joints it seems to be OK.
