If you're a qualified, trainee, or retired electrician - Which country is it that your work will be / is / was aimed at?
United Kingdom
What type of forum member are you?
DIY or Homeowner (Perhaps seeking pro advice, or an electrician)
What are the rules and requirements for doing part p training whilst not being a fully qualified electrician. I do a lot of low voltage security installation work in domestic properties and sometimes spurs are required so that’s always to be provided by the customer who normally hires an electrician. If I done part p training would I be able to install these myself.

What are you considering as Part P training?
The City and Guilds 2393-10 is nothing more than an exercise in the Building Regulations it is not going to make you an electrician so what are you looking at?

Providing certain criteria are met then Part P notification will not be a requirement. These are in England :-

1. The work is not in a special location. This practically amounts to within the zones within a bathroom. Or a room containing a swimming pool or a Sauna Heater.

and

2. The work does not require the installation of a new circuit.

Part P Also covers the replacement of a Consumer Unit.

That said adding a spur might have other gotchas that you should be aware of if doing the work.

Such as the Condition of the Earthing of the Installation, RCD protection requirements and testing of the existing circuit to make sure it is not faulty.

This would also require you to issue a minor works certificate. You also will need suitable test equipment.

Also you would need to make sure your insurance covers you for Electrical work.

I understand it won’t make me an electrician but the last house I worked in the builder fitted a new spur off of an existing one which I thought wasn’t legal unless a qualified electrician but he said he done a part p training course and is now able to do so.
I wasn’t even sure that was a thing so thought I would ask.

Thank you. Some good points there.

People don’t like paying for an electrician to come fit a spur so security stuff ends up getting put on an extension lead or being plugged into a socket which I don’t like doing so I wondered if there was a way I could do them myself.
