Usually the answer to that is, No questions are stupid, but in this case..

There must have been something else in your thoughts when you dreamt up the question.

Is an alarm too expensive, not practical to install, tennants won't agree or pay for it?

The customer is a complete pain in the arse and wont accept she needs a fire alarm system! lol

The Canary has to be the best reply
No 2 would be that "look out" tower that the firemen used to have, only works well on flat landscape though :flowers:

I remember Brighton & Hove Council saying the same thing to the fire Maintainence company over brighton peer.....gonna be an expensive rebuild with no insurance payout...!

It can be a very confusing thing " What/how many fire alarms" everyone has a view and a recommendation. The Insurance Co, the local authority, the building inspectors the Fire Service etc etc. I had a problem with requirements for a fairly remote farm house that was just a tinder box. In the end we just called in the local Fire Service Officer and did a bit more just for luck. There doesn't seem to be a definitive set of requirements but then each place has it's own risks. If I were you I would ask your client to ask the Fire Safety Officer to pay a visit, it's free!! We also kept the recommendations that we were given just in case!!!

whatever the fire officer and insurance company want. their the ones who have to deal with it when the dung hits the fan.

Not any more as you have to do your own fire risk assessment on your property not them.

If possible there are systems such as C-Tec where I think you can use up to two, possibly 3 repeater panels for a small standard conventional system whereby you would only have one system with 4 zones, however, the cost for the repeaters can be expensive and if its about cost then they're not likely to want it, I'd advise her to get the local fire officer to pay a visit or ask her to get her buildings insurance company rep to ascertain exactly what level of protection they need.

You could just tell her that you can rebuild bricks and mortar but how much does it cost for a new life after someone dies due to lack of fire detection! normally works for me, mind you when they get to the point of awkward when it comes to things like this I normally walk away

Also most manufacturers can send you a rep out to spec the system for you if you have a difficult customer or a large grey area!

Well thats were fire alarm installation companies come in here...this is our job, we design and work with the local authorties to provide this service. Its not hit or miss, its a trade we provide and the risk assessment is part of it. Guessing at the job is the biggest risk of all
