I am doing a job for a builder who is doing a fairly big job on a domestic house. His work will take perhaps another month to complete.

I have completed 95% of my work but cant finish the rest until he has completed certain bits which may be another few weeks or even the full month. It's been around 2 weeks since I started the job.

I'm not really fussed about when I get paid I'm more just a little bored today so thought I'd start a thread because I like chatting on this site! But I would also be interested in what the 'norm' is about when you get paid? Is it normal to wait until the job is completely finished or to expect part payments throughout the work. It's about £1000 in total.

I could send him a quick text and ask him as he's friendly and I trust him, but I would also like to know what you guys generally do as well?

Cheers all :smile5:

I basically roll like this:
Quick rewires, new builds, extensions, etc = part payment after 1st fix and final payment after 2nd fix.

jobs that run over a length of time= interim payments usually every month.

small money jobs= payment on completion/within 7days.

I think I'll just leave it then Lee, no text for the builder. He'll pay me in a month!

Id want part payment in stages, 1st fix, 2nd fix etc. I wouldn't start next stage until paid.

I work in commercial and industrial so my payment terms are 30/45/60 days from month end that you send the invoice in...so a little different.

When working direct for customers, anything under £1000 is payment on completion. Anything over £1000, 20% deposit either before I start or on the day I start, but I will arrive with all materials needed. 45% more after 1st fix, 30% after second fix with the final 5% upon receipt of cert.

To be honest this last 5% has never been held back, but its there in case I have an awkward customer then I can ask for the 35% second fix money before issuing the cert. This way I will only get knocked for max 5%.

For builders, its 50% after 1st fix, 50% after second fix. If there is a delay as in your case I ask for a partial payment

It's a different ball game for me being Industrial/ commercial I can be waiting up to 90 days with some of my regular trusted customers, The very best I can expect is 30 days from end of month, which can cause headaches sometimes and I'm not talking small amounts either but it's the trade I chose so no good complaining.
