Hi there, I know this has already been talked about on here but I'm still a bit confused about which one to take!

I am only interested (at the minute) in domestic work, I have the 2382, 2377 and an EAL Domestic Installer qualification along with a building regs qualification. The qualifiications I've already done have given me an good understanding of Inspection and Testing.

Currently I'm looking at working for myself and building up a business ,then hopefully one day I'll branch out into doing PIR work which requires the 2391 qualification. At the minute though I'm still 'doing my apprenticeship' so to speak, so would I be better off doing the 2392 now and then doing the 2391 later?

My concern with that is as a domestic electrician being called to sort out problems at someones house and having to fault find and test to sort out the issue, surely needs the 2391 as that is more or less a form of PIR? Or is that not the case?

I have been offered the 2392 at a good price but would sooner save the money and attempt the 2391 if thats the best thing to do.

Can anyone suggest what the best plan of action would be?!

Thanks so much for your help.

Alan

Hi
I have a similar qualification set to you and also have the 2392.
I have been advised that the 2391 has a very low pass rate - and also more importantly that it deals also with commercial installations (which I don't yet need to know about).
My main reason for considering 2391 was to enable me to join NICEIC and to do PIRs with their backing.

BUT NICEIC have advised me that:-
1. you can join them as a Domestic Installer (£400)
2. they now run a 3 day PIR course using Virtual Reality testing (£700).
3. if you join as a Domestic Installer and take the PIR course, you can then pay another £400 registration fee and they will back you for PIRs.

I am considering this myself.

My understanding is that the subject matter for the 2391 is the same as the 2392 - but with the addition of more 3 phase knowledge. It is also "closed book" and requires you to describe in more detail how you would tackle situations - rather than just multiple choice and practical tests as per the 2392.

Hope this helps

Like everything there is no right answer really, I'm going to do a bit more research then make my mind up. (hopefully!)

Thanks again,
