I installed a doorbell where the button to activate it is 70 feet from the chime. I thought 14 gauge would be enough, but when I pressed the button, no chime. I realize what a mistake this was. I've attached a diagram showing the ridiculous distance in number 1. Would it make a difference if I connected to a much closer power source that I discovered as shown in number 2? It's a Home Depot-bought doorbell - there isn't a separate transformer. The transformer is just built into the chime.

So, do I go with 10 gauge or 12?

Guess I'll try 12 gauge. Thanks!

Hello. Welcome to the forum.

We are predominantly a UK based membership, with only a few others from around the globe.
I’m afraid most of us were sleeping when you asked the question.

70 feet isn’t a huge distance, so shouldn’t cause a problem.

The wire on the doorbell circuit should not be connected to ground. It should go back to the transformer.

Can we see a photo of the connections on the chime, and the push button.

I ended up using 10 gauge from the power source to the doorbell button, then 12 gauge from the button to the chime.

Thanks for the reply. I've attached a pic of the chime w built-in transformer and a drawing of the underside of the momentary rocker switch that will activate it (don't have the switch with me at the moment).

What is the green/yellow wire?

I may have just wired it wrong. I'm reposting pics that show my wiring configuration. I'm wondering if I should have used the green/yellow wire...?

Green/yellow is earth. What does it mean by empty holes on the switch, are there no terminals there it seems odd to connect across N and L.
