Hi,

UK:

My doorbell is on my lighting circuit in my new build, by the bell box is a switched fused spur, with a 13A fuse in it, which is probably too high to be of use on a lighting circuit, however I have discovered this switch does not turn the bell box off, and was wondering if the switch plate has just been used to loop the wiring together as load hasn’t been used?

What do you think?

Please see photo?

Cheers
James

It's either part of a ring with no load,or it's been wired wrong

If you're saying the fused spur doesn't switch your bell box off, then I suspect it isn't event connected to it. As above, it doesn't look like there is a load connected to it. Could it have been used to supply something else previously?

Nope, brand new build and we are first occupants, it is located up by the bell box and there is a feed of two pieces of grey 3 core electrical cable and both neutrals are in supply N and both lives in supply L.

The bell is on the lighting circuit and the spir is definitely connected to lighting circuit too.

Think it’s just been looped as a ring through the switch plate as both lives and both neutrals go into supply L and supply N, load hasn’t been connected presumably meaning why the switch doesn’t work.

Just to avoid confusion on #4, I suspect the “grey 3 core” is actually a twin and earth.

OP, can you photograph inside the bell transformer? See if it’s the same t&e.

New build, it wouldn’t be surprising if it’s been connected wrong.

Sorry yep twin and earth, didn’t know the official name for it.

I could check for continuity between the bell box and T&E and the Switch T&E and work out which is supply.

If you’re comfortable and confident to do this, then yes… that would solve it.

Power off to the circuit, of course.

I have tested which is live feed and which is supply feed, rewired the t&e into supply and load and tested continuity between supply live and load live and the switch does now switch it off, appears it was never switched in the first place just looped through the switch plate. Should I downgrade the 13A fuse for a 3A?

You could. Or a 1A if you can find one.

In all likelihood, the 6A breaker at the board will trip well before a fuse in the event of a fault.

Sorted now all, thanks for assistance, the switch does now isolate the bell when switched off at the spur and works when on at spur.

Yeah, I also have three extractor fans on lighting circuits for the bathrooms which also have 13A fused spurs.

Again…. Not surprising on a new build.

Out of interest, did you get a full RCBO consumer unit with an SPD, or a “budget” dual rcd board?
