I notice some members have a solid line through thier name, does this mean they are banned, if so is it temporary or permanent? If temporary how long for, I cant find any info on the site, thx

They're banned for life if they have a line through their name. Very very few times have we banned temporarily. They're normally (not always) the type of member to cause lots of moderation time I've found and banning people for a week when they login monthly for example stops nothing.

9 times out of 10 they're not an actual genuine member, they'll be some company either coming clean, or posing as a sparky, and trying to gain some financial income from it (rendering all their posts at least biased, if not false too). The other 10% is usually some automated spammer that's not an actual human but a script that's automatically searching for pages to register on, it registers, some manage to post something, others struggle - ALL get clocked!

:)

Give it a few months, enough time to monitor repeat offenders, and their accounts will be cleared up. Until then, we like to see when each time they attempt to login as it often leaves us more information to trace them by, preventing more of the same type of real or automated spammer.

p.s. thread moved to the off-topic forum. Please try to keep threads in the correct forum categories. It's a pain in the back side us keep moving them around for you so they get responded to!!

No ban for this time though. I'll let you off. haha

(Joke!!!)

Don't know if it's different south of the border, but lifetime bans are illegal in Scotland

I know of someone who had a lifetime ban from a bowling club, and sued. The court ordered that lifetime bans were unlawful as a murderer gets out after a specific period. There then had to be a proportionate time period (such as 5 years, not life)

ps this was way before the human rights stuff out in recent years

IQ has requested a 2 weeks "holiday" but the others have been banned for good reasons, let them come back in 25 years time, I'll be happy with that :)

Bad boys are banned for life, some like IQ have asked to be banned for 2 weeks as he just cant keep away (NO JOKE).

When I was a Super Moderator on a forum that I had a big interest in I requested that I be "Sent to Coventry" because I was spending every spare minute of every day on there and realised it was ruining my life lol

What a state to get into eh? It's surprising how easily it is to get hooked though.

Unfortunately for Mods and Admin there is far, far more work that goes on behind the scenes to enable the smooth running of a forum.

The problem I faced was I was lucky enough to have built up a massive amount of knowledge which I enjoyed sharing. I often found myself still on the forum during early hours of the morning and often going to work the following day with very little or no sleep. If I wasn't posting I would normally be producing detailed "How To" guides or searching out useful information available on the internet.

I am currently on 12,334 posts and the only time a post would count is if it was posted in a technical forum lol I'd hate to think how many I would be on if it included the others but I imagine it would probably be at least double if not triple that figure :(

What a sad case lol

I was wondering why IQ was not here and I'm pleased to here it is because of the reason mentioned.

:thumbsup

I don't go on the other forum as much any more but I do try to visit a couple of times a month. This particular interest I had eventually funded my work vehicle and all my electrical tools :D

Shortcircuit you can't leave us in suspense like this, what was the "specialist web site" that you were a mod for? Nothing kinky I hope ;);).

Nothing kinky at all Paul lol Well, having said that I do believe that there is now a condition called "mechaphillia"? so perhaps those kind of people would think it's kinky??? Not me though:wings:

I owned a particular "series" of auto-mobile which I did a lot of work on including engine conversions etc. Stripped and rebuilt it so many times I could probably do it with my eyes closed now ;)

Like I mention though, that hobby/interest of mine is now gone and funded my van and all my tools :D

there is a way round most perma bans, unless the admins are particularly crafty....as I am sure Dan is :p

Do you not have a Captcha to stop automated registrations? (I cant remember when I registered)

I am an admin a forum myself Jason, it is nice not to have to worry about it here, but if you do ever want some backup let me know, you can never have enough mods xD
