This is relating to another thread of mine but too cut a long story short, I'm in the process of renovating my first house and a rewire is on the cards. Not wanting to pay the stupid fees I decided to just get on with it and get a PIR when I come to sell later in life. Had a tax guy round today about council tax exception while its unliveable which he said he would do (good news).
Now the visit overall went ok and he was a nice lad. But it was more like a building control visit asking what I'm doing, what plans I have, which I was honest about, as it was evident I was rewiring. I did ask (playing naive) if he was going to contact building control. To which he said I had too. So was his visit and report just for rates purposes or will LABC get wind of his visit aswell?
Do I chance this or not I think is the question.

I'm in the process of change of use to a dwelling , have visits from both departments. At least in my council they don't talk at all

Personally just pay the fees to the LBCA for the electrics, you are trying to save on the council tax ie unoccupied no bathroom etc
You will be saving money on paying the inspection fee for the electrics compared to the council tax
But im am sure if the electrical works will be carried out by a part p electrician then no fees involved (ie if you will go part p later on use it as you inspection job)
Personally i feel you are trying to cut to many costs (corners) and in my opinion only you will get caught

But why not do it correctly and notify?
If you burn the house down I bet the insurance won't be too keen to payout

Ashrow, I don't plan on becoming part p anytime soon as I work in an industrial environment, hopefully from what I save in council tax ill spend on the fees so break even. I think your right tho as much as I don't want to pay it, it might be better off not risking it now someone has noted it down. Bloody council and there robbing ways :)

Phill, i hate their fees to ! I work for many landlords that move business to other premises so they do not have to pay rates etc on empty shops or even take out roofs and kitchen etc to reduce the empty premises cost
Look at it in a long term... think, if you dont have to pay the above £500 council tax and only have to pay around £200 for electrical inspection work then so be it
Please note though, if the LBCA think you are tryoing to cheat them then they will pursue al avenues, they all work for the same place and need the funds as the Government are reducing what each gets so they come to us easy target people lol
