Hi,

just a quick one please. I'm doing a CU change over domestic, all initial tests are fine with final circuits etc. Just one thing concerned about. the main earthing conductor is a galvanised band type welded onto the incoming sheath (TN-S), screwed to the metal cut-out main fuse housing (1361 Type2), then onto the MET.?

I haven't seen this before so was just wondering if that is acceptable amongst you more experienced electricians? The Ze is all fine and well within limits (0.26)... I dont want to cut off the existing connection to the incoming as this seems well connected and I don't want to compromise.??

Thanks.

Sounds like a typical earthing band found on some incoming DNO supply cables ... a pic would be good?

Quite standard your ze is fine, why are you worried?.

Thanks, wasn't worried, just curious as haven't seen it before and wasn't sure if it was standard or typical practise at some time. thought i'd try get some feedback.

Probably tinned copper, queried it with a local dno as saw something similar on a lead sheathed TNS supply recently...with a less than neat make off...Ze was 0.06 so appearances in this case were deceiving.

Would galv/tinned band be up for a Pefc of around 4K, though? I have no idea, but it sounds a little on the puny side to me.

See it all the time on streetlighting. One incomer (lead sheath) into Pillar, then 3 or 4 outgoing. All cables with sweated on perforated band then usually a robust bare cable bolted to it going onto a bolt on the pillar itself.

Usually tests out fine.

Yep, the band (normally perforated with 2BA or larger holes) will almost certainly be tinned copper!!!

geordie's the best expert on this subject:

1. he used to be in a band.

2. he wants galvanising to preserve for future generations.
