Hi all, I've been working in the Industry for over a decade... I have 2330, 2391, 17th , NICEIC qual' supervisor etc. (but no NVQ ) - I was asked for my gold card a while ago to get on site but I only had my ECS paper cert and was refused entry. I phoned the JIB and was told that i'm not an electrician... :rant:how do I get round this without paying a kings ransom???????

You cant, you now need the NVQ level 3 unfortunately. I believe the forum sponser XS training provides this but also now you need to do the AM2 in tandem with it.

Why not just apply for a card and see what you get back if it is just to get you on site?

I was thinking of just getting a CSCS site operative card... I know other sparks in my position who get on site with these... thanks for your advice... :smile5:

Don't go down that route! Waste of money my friend. Ok, the CSCS card will let you get on site, as a labourer! But you need the ECS (JIB) card to be able to carry out any electrical work!

I understand your situation, a guy called Tony who I worked with for 20 odd years and who is the best Electrician I ever worked with never had an NVQ or even went to college, he was site trained in the 1950s and worked in heavy industry up until the age of 74 when he finally retired, he would never get a gold card, but it doesn't mean jack really. You have a history, you can get references from people and customers who know you, that is good enough for most Employers. If you came to me and told me your history I would make a couple of calls, once it was clarified you would be offered a position, don't worry too much about a gold card mate.

Now that said hehe, is it really too much hassle to get the NVQ? I think it would be pretty easy enough wouldn't it?

I have the same qualifications minus the niceic, and when my card came back it said "trainee level 2" never had a problem though, even gets a laugh but all they want to see is that you have sat the test and passed and are competent on site
