Is it normal to give customer an itemised invoice. Or just keep things simple and do parts and labour invoice.

You don't want your customer googling every little bit of kit you've billed for then arguing ---- they could have got x & y cheaper elsewhere !
Global parts & labour invoice is fine :)

Agreed!

No point in handing them the rope to hang you with is there?

Even if you are selling the gear cheap an itemised invoice is just more pointless paperwork time - there's enough of that as it is

NEVER itemise any aspect of an invoice UNLESS specifically asked - and then only give "labour" and "parts" totals.

I don't usually price individual items, but I often list the parts used and then just give a total materials price (which includes my markup and is clearly stated on my website).

eg, Labour, 3 hours .. £xx
Materials: 5ft fluorescents x3, diffusers x3, junction box, cable, SFCU, mini-trunking, sundries. £xx

I think this helps justify the price, as most customers don't realise how much stuff you need to use for many jobs.

Edit: That's if it's a price and materials job.

If a fixed price job, previously quoted, then the invoice just gives the quoted price with no breakdown of time or materials. If the customer's already accepted your price, then there's nothing that you need to justify.

I group my materials in to categories its usually a happy medium and can give the customer an insight into where the bulk of the cost lies so avoiding having to do a itemised list which i tend to get asked if i just send a bland invoice in.... although fitting expensive machine parts is usually in my interest to show on an invoice so the customer understands what i repaired or replaced.
