Looking at fat track courses

Hi there.
I'm new to this forum and would like some advice on getting trained as an electrician.
I'm 40 years old and thinking of going down the fast track route. Is this a good idea? I see people are saying they are a waste of time if you haven't any experiance. I've worked with electrics for 10 years, mainly as an AV installer and 6 months as house hold electrician.
Is there any training companies in the West Sussex area?

With no training at all?? That just about sums up the state of this industry in the UK!!

Without wishing to sound negative but :

Do you have about £6K for the courses/books?
Do you have about £7K for tools/van/scheme/insurance?
Can you live off no income for a couple of years?

And don't believe you can earn £50K doing this because you can't

Of course you can earn £50k just use your electrical skills to wire up some grow lamps and some of those leafy plants in the loft

So you have experience of cabling, wiring, terminating audio visual systems. This is a different kettle of fish to having the knowledge to become an electrician.

I feel for you as someone of your age it must be difficult to find the right path for your goal. I did a 4 year apprenticeship from school and the oldest adult trainee i ever worked with was early 30's.

Maybe 'fast' tracking is the only option for someone in your situation but i am dead against such a thing in all honesty.


There's a lot to take in within this trade and its constantly changing. I have practised for over a decade since leaving school including my apprenticeship and even i am still learning.


Hopefully someone here will have a better suggestion, i wish you all the best!

I think there's a college around Worthing somewhere that do electrical training, but they're a college so probably don't do this "fast track".
If you want to do "fast track" you might as well do it via distance learning, so you can do it around your other commitments then get a full time job in electrics when you've finished.
It won't be easy, but I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that.
