You know at the end of the Year when your Accountant says bring in your books and you take him the shoebox full of invoices, well that's book-keeping.

Oh hang on you probably use the Ken Dodd system, pay up if caught.
i plead insanity.

Just saying hello. I've joined this group to seek advice as I am new to this lark. I'm doing bookkeeping for an electrician
Not sure how to pose questions in the correct format but my first question is.
If as a sub contractor my son pays mileage to his sub contractors. Then who claims the fuel used in the actual receipts that they purchase, them or him, or no one ?

the sub contractors will claim for fuel, same as their other vehicle costs. your son claims back for the allowance that he's paid them, along with wages.

Thanks for that. Should the mileage the subbies charge him be passed on by him to the customer like materials can be or is that pushing it. He does charge mileage out but only his own mileage for a call out etc

he charges the customer what he wants as long as they are willint to accept the quote. i'd not put it in as a separate item though.. some jobs are priced well and travel costs are covered with the labour charges, some might be underpriced.

Uw this is great getting answers instead of wondering...
Next, Should sub contractors getting paid hourly be paid for an hour lunch break. He pays them at the moment but I don't think he should. Any advice much appreciated. Should he maybe change it if he employs any new ones ?

Depends what the agreement's are, me I would agree a price and how much it costs the Subby to get there is down to him, how long has he been trading? not long?

Jobs not done till the paper works are complete, if he is employing sub contractors, then I would maintain that the payment of travel to and from the jobs will be down to the Sub contractors which should I imagine be reflected in the price offered to your relation, not down to him to pay them travel time and money. Note I have always worked on the books so I have never had to deal with this issue, but to me it seems more of a common sense thing, if someone agrees to do some work for me and gives me a price, that price is accepted then the Subby takes responsibility for travel cost. IMO

Thank you.. if you pay hourly, would you pay for hour lunch breaks ?

An example Diydebs, I did a job recently, admittedly only a small job, I priced it on Materials + mark up + the time that I envisaged it would take me it was 40+ miles from my home, if I finished earlier than expected then that was a bonus in my favour, if it took longer, and I had to return the next day due to an oversight on my part then it was a loss for, I had to all intensive purposes entered into a verbal contract with the chap who was working for, he accepted job done, I would imagine it's similar to a sub contracting role, "how much would you charge me to do so and so, I will supply the materials" end of really may be pay him for his time in looking at the job on an hourly basis, but the rest is down to him, now look what you have done, going to get all sorts of carp from Guys and Gals who do this on a regular basis.
