Discuss no discrimination in sockets & lights in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

the only termination i found was twisted cables with tape on it. I did tell the customer i can make it work but i am not responsible for the wiring unless its all done properly.

yes Charlie there is living accommodation above the shop.
vortigen the feed is taken from somewhere in the stud wall, i think i will have to take a new feed from socket put fcu and take it to switch and then to the light to make it correct.

Sounds like you've been deal a right Beadle.

Going of the little info available,

Without finding where the light cable is junctioned your options are limited and I'd be wary of having anything to do with it.

Is this three lights on one switch? If so...

Whilst a simple solution is to run a new feed to the light switch either from FCU or CU. Probably surface in trunking.

Major problem is the original feed is still live, and as such would be unprotected against fault currents if you then upped the MCB rating to resolve the other issues.

You could remove all the sockets wago the cables in the back box and fit a blanking plate. Then downgrade the MCB to 6A to cover the lighting. You'd then have to run in new sockets in trunking on their own MCB.

This does have it's own issues in that it will leave a very confusing installation for any future Spark working on it and the likelihood of some numpty reverting it is quite high.

Ultimately it needs rewiring and doing properly as I cannot see a way of putting it right that doesn't feel like a bodge.

To do this you'd still have to disconnect the original feed for reasons stated above.

However if you are confident you know which wall it's in you could cut in a back box, look to see where the junction is, cut another back box below the joint and fit FCU drop a new cable down from the top back box to the FCU and finally use the top box as a junction box.

The starts will have to align and hope there are no noggins.

Here’s what I would do..
No alterations whatsoever and no further work until a full pi is carried out.
If the property owner doesn’t agree then walk away..
It’s totally bodged downstairs and this will probably be the case upstairs, whats to say that upstairs aren’t taken power from below?
Don’t go down the road of trying to put a bandage over any of it

I have came across a problem where the sockets and lights are run on a same circuit and it's done in a way where the person have put probably junction boxes in the walls which are not accessible and only 1 cable is coming to sockets , light switches and lights.
I can't put fcu to discriminate as one cable to switches.
is there any way i can discriminate socket and lights without running a new circuit?
any help would be much appreciated.
If it's been wired like that then all I would say is it needs a complete rewire what else is hidden in the wall ?

Regardless of whether it is tripping on overload or not, if customer doesn't want it done properly you derate mcb to protect smallest cable. Tell them you either do the work properly or you.dont do the work it's as simple as that just because they don't want to pay doesn't mean you also consider a bodge job
