hi, first i must confess that i am not good at the alarms really, yesterday i called by a small hotel, it has a very old fire alarm system, there is a heat alarm missing in the kitchen, i had a look of other heat or smoke alarms they all looked very big and old--the owner said at least 20 years old, so do you guys think i can buy a modern, small heat detector--like rifike--- and fit in?

cheers in advance,

Sorry to be a "prophet of doom", but if you don't have the appropriate training or experience in fire alarm installation/maintenance/certification, I would leave well alone. It's a life critical system, and although helping out now (with the best of intentions) will no doubt be appreciated by the hotel owners, if there's subsequently a fire and life is lost, guess who they will come running to! As in a hotel, the system should be under a maintenance agreement.

If you think I'm over-reacting google "Rosepark Nursing Home FAI". A thread runs through this of a caring owner, but someone who relied on the skill and knowledge of a jobbing electrician. There were several other interacting issues which led to the disasterous loss of life - think very carefully before you get involved!

Most detection has a effective use of aprox 10 years. A system installed 20 years ago under old bs pre 1995 would be looking at installing new system to L1. I would suggest the owner who is responsible for the building, conducts a risk assessment on his property or seeks professional advice.
