Requirements for RCD protection

Good morning all. So question; if you’re making additions to an existing circuit, but the new cable is not min 50mm deep in wall or mechanically protected and the current circuit is not RCD protected do you tell customer that RCD protection is required as per the regs? My thought is yes and explain why it’s needed to customer; if they don’t want it then I’d walk away but just want to hear others views. TIA

Depends what you are adding / doing ...

So adding 3 new double sockets in to existing ring but one of the sockets in the wall cannot go 50mm deep. Oval conduit isn’t really mechanical protection.

If adding cable in a way that it requires rcd protection, then yes you should add rcd protection.

Yep, there the option for that possibly. My post was really to answer a question I had with another spark about some work being done. My view was it needs either proper mechanical protection (metal conduit) or (a future proof measure) RCD protection.

Yep, that’s my thoughts too.

For me, with the new regs I always where applicable advise customers about the need for RCD protection. Some jobs I win, some I lose as there’s always someone willing to just wire it up and then throw smoke.

same as all of us.all new sockets added require RCD protection, even if the existing sockets are not. e/g. feed new sockets via a RCD FCU. if not protecting the whole circuit.

Completely agree. I tried explaining this to someone and it fell on deaf ears.

I was doing kitchen refurb, where the client had a couple of FCU’s and wanted to replace them with socket outlets (no rcd protection).

I asked my scheme, if that would be classed as ‘maintenance’? I got a ‘stupid boy’ sigh, and told no it’s not.

In my company, 'cos there was only me, they were the only other person, whose opinion I could ask. Plus paying them £500 a year, I like to get my monies worth.

You can of course, ask members opinions here.

In fairness to them, the Tech Support of my Scheme were quite knowledgeable, thorough with their replies, and from the experience & qualifications they held (as seen from editorials on them), I was in no doubt of their qualified answers. There was a particular individual, whom I wasn't sure about, the rest were exemplary.

When you consider, when you ring in with a query, the guy would respond straight away with his guidance quoting regulation numbers etc, its not like replying to a thread here, with the advantage of time, browsing regs book or using Google. They were most helpful.

I don't think you can criticise something, without the experience of using it.

My daughter just bought a house...went and had a look on Saturday...new extension built 6 months ago,,,new lighting and ring final circuits to extension and kitchen......Metal sockets..metal switches no sign of an RCD anywhere......looked up the details on the BC website and a electrical notification was sent by the company that done the work.....description.....work carried out in a special location...new circuits..........Found the company on line registered FULL SCOPE NIC..............On the phone tomorrow morning
