Is it ok for you to connect to it ? earth clamp to sheath.

I had a call tonight and a customer could not reset his RCD so no power at all.Ok fixed the fault unlpugged the kettle and it reset as soon as we plug it in it tripped so power all restored.Bid disadvantage of having 1 RCD for whole house.
Double checked earth loop and got over 8.2 ohms on 32amp ring main and thought it could be a loose connection so did cooker socket and got 7.92 for a 40 amp MCB.
Nice bit of 10mm cable on gas and water but no EARTH at meter head,no MET nothing.Had board changed about 10 years ago he said.
All the houses roughly the same in the street all built same time so popped next door and they had a TN-S.Soldered to a wide strip of woven braided steel strap.
So fitted a clamp on cable sheath ,16mm to a MET and 16mm to CU and gas and water connected ,rechecked and got 0.62 ohms on ring so happier now.
I am amazed that it had no earth at all and had been like it for years. It has even had a new digital meter fitted and you would have thought that the meter fitter might have noticed.
No cup of coffee as kettle knackered but £10 tip for coming out.
Should i inform DNO ?

Yes you should inform the DNO, although whether it will achieve anything is anyone's guess.
What type of clamp did you fit, it should have been a constant tension spring clamp.

Oh no it was a Legrand Tenby rapid clamp ultra
http://www.legrand.co.uk/en/en/liblocal/pdf/Tenby%20Rapid%20Clamp%20Ultra%20DL.pdf

I like them and use them all the time,I also crimp the 16mm cable as opposed to just clamping it.Looks more professional.
That reminds me i need more crimps ! With the suppliers cable and the soft sheath it really did feel like i got a good purchase.
Can you paste a link so i can see what one of those constant tension clamps look like, sounds like a jubilee clip .
Thanks

This is exactly like a house I've been working on.

I called the DNO & asked them to sort an earth out & they wanted £150 for doing it.

I told them that the supply comes looped from next door via two bits of VIR with a csa of about 6mm.

They said they would come out to change it, but would only change "like for like" i.e. nice new cables, but still no earth unless they were paid £150.

So far, they have been to the premises 3 times - the latest was today - & each time they have been unable to do the work because of paperwork problems.

Today, they were at the premises for less than 5 minutes, but were allocated 3 hours to do the job so they moved their van up the street & spent the remainder of the time sunbathing !!!

DNO's? ........ Total waste of space, skin & oxygen.

****ing hell! Just one more turn... bang!

Agree entirely he is a braver lad than me ..........................nothing as embaressing as a nice big bang lot's of flashes and the DNO sueing you after you call them up and tell them what you tried to do ...................

wrap some old scrap stripped 6mm round it. get a blowlamp and solder . make sure the van's pointing in a getaway position with the engine running.

lads,lads,lads

It done up with a screwdriver not a socket wrench ! if i put my adjustable on my screwdriver i might be able to crush it if i really tried. Its that same as a band type ,the screw does not touch the shroud it presses on a band. Its only lead so you have to be careful.
Anyway going back there to change lighting they phoned this morning.

Ordered some of those clamps, thank you 'alanl' a helpful post.

For info incoming voltage was 253 last night, pretty high

EARTHING CLAMPS MUST NOT BE USED ON PAPER INSULATED/LEAD SHEATHED OR STEEL ARMOURED CABLES
from Snags & Solutions book Snag No 8.
Request a earth from the supply company and yes it's chargable.
In Scotland the number is 08452700785.
Use the clients land line as the system knows where you are.

What’s wrong with that? Just use plumbing metal not solder.
Wire brush the lead, bind with copper, coat with tallow and run the metal on to it. Simple!
PS you’ll need a mole skin to wipe it smooth.

No need for the van running.

Well all I can say is you are fools all of you for even considering making a connection to a DNO cable of any sort as it is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE under STATUTE LAW.
That is you will be prosecuted by the Crown Prosecution Service, HSE may also want a pop as may well the Police and the DNO may well also undertake a Civil Law Prosecution.
In an emergency situation all you can do is TT.
You should have placed an emergency safety call out on the DNO and forced them into maintaining their network according to the requirements of Statute Law.

My local DNO will not fit or remove 951's as it is considered dangerous unless they do a live disconnection to the incoming cable and then remove the clamp.
These devices are NOT designed to connect to a "soft" cable of any sort.
If you have fitted the clamp I think you have, I have not looked this up, then this is even worse.

I am appalled by your lack of knowledge about the Statute Law that you are legally bound to work to.

Oh and as fat as sweating a joint on, same goes, it is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE.

Come on guys, show you are professionals, this is worse than the 5dw etc. that you are all complaining about!

I am appalled by this thread and all of your readiness to advise criminal actions, completely appalled.

so i take it you work for a DNO then?

be realistic, weve all used an earth clamp around the sheath at one time or another so we could get our job done..... its not hurting anybody

same problem i've got right now in my own home have just phoned dno and keep getting fobbed of. So from my connection get no reading but have a reading of the sheath, so not a good idea to put my own clamp on?

I just spoke to the 6th person from the dno the nice lady said they dont provide the service and I will have to clamp it myself. Absolutely useless

You take it wrong I do NOT work for a DNO.

IF you are admitting tampering with DNO equipment then I suggest you don't do it in a public forum.
It is a criminal offence.
Oh, and NO we have not ALL done it at some, just because your standards are down in the gutter does not mean mine are.
I am an NICEIC AC amongst other things.

It could hurt someone and it is a criminal offence.

My local DNO used to fit them, now they won't even tough them live, they disconnect and then deal with them if they have to.
IT IS WRONG.
If the DNO has provided TN-S, brush up on your law and get them to maintain it, or get them to come and to an emergency repair, else TT it and job done.

I thought that the members here had greater competence than this, I was oh, so, so, mistaken.

I am appalled that you not only do this but advocate it to others,

better than having no earth though you have to agree.

i know no one will admit to it. i mean even i am just speaking **hypothetically** but you would be amazed at how many people cut tags to pull the main fuse and use bonding clamps on the sheath
