Swa alternative for outdoor

Armoured cable or equivalent to go around garden border for on the ground flood lights everyone using any alternative to swa, will H07RN be OK or not will be on rcbo thank

The fact it is on an RCBO is not relevant. The cable must be suitable for the environment and installation method.

I have done a few garden projexts using this stuff and black flex

However none of these jobs invoved burying the cable , it was all under decking or clipped on the surface

If you plan to bury cable then SWA all the way

HO7 will be OK if you're surface clipping, however Hi-Tuff (NYY-J) is also suitable for lightweight use when buried (eg, you don't expect a mechanical digger to do the weeding and the cable has just been pushed a few inches below the surface) and will be easier to find at a wholesaler and probably cheaper. It's fundamentally got the same outer sheathing for waterproof and UV resilience, just without the next layer of armoured protection.

As I am a bit of a nerd, a few years ago ( during lockdown ) I looked into what other countries use for buried cables in domestic / car park etc and we are one of the only countries I could find who use SWA / arounred cable. Most other countries use either plastic conduit or plastic flex conduit. some just bury cable that looks much like FP cable.

Other countries do use SWA for much larger distribution supplies and three phase etc but I couldn't find a single example of it being used domesiclly.

Conduit and flexi versions is commonly used across Europe and North America anyway, so it makes sense that 'tradition' is just carried over, no different I guess to the UK's fetish with clips.
