Hi all a couple of questions will a 24volt dc supply switch in a coil rated for 48volts dc. If so would it be safe. Also how much voltage can a 24volt relay take could it take 48volts or will it blow the relay?

Thanks trig

The relay coil will have a voltage rating and the relays switching contacts will have a voltage rating also. You need the correct voltage to supply the coil. You also need to ensure you are switching a load within the parameters of the contacts with regard to voltage and current.

it will perhaps half switch it. making it a lib. dem. not knowing which way to go.

Simple answer is use the correct relay coil for the voltage you have access to.

These kinds of questions only get asked when something has gone wrong or been ordered wrong, if a 24v supply operated a 48v coil as routine their wouldn't be 2 distinct voltage rating if you think about it, there would be one with a wide tolerance instead but as this is not the case then it can be assumed you cannot mix and match.

Which is the case, so correct voltage for the coil only.

So who ordered the wrong relay?

Depending on the type of relay the under voltage operating range can be quite wide. Just don’t apply over voltage.

Telemacinique contactors can easily have their coils swapped to whatever suits. Ive seen myself swapping the 24v coil for a 110v coil plenty of times

Who mentioned Telemec and contactors?

Was you also doing it in front of a mirror?

If you are really interested whether a 24V supply will operate a 48V coiled contactor then why not try it on the bench as an experiment.
Regardless of whether it works or not do not put it into operation as part of the system.
