What do you think to this..

I have been asked to install underfloor heating in a new built ensuite bathroom, The builder has had to put a number of layers down on the floor like a thick insulation board and has then laid chipboard flooring down.

I have been told i cant raise the floor up with yet another insualting board as the floor level is already at a stupid height and me adding to it and then with tiles ontop is out of the question.

So basically what are your thoughts on laying a 150w 2.5m2 heatmat onto chipboard? as i cant raise this floor level anymore would you be happy to do this?

no would be the answer, chipboard is not much use with heated floors
I have found it only works well on tiles or solid wood laminate to about 12,5 mmm
also how is the chipboard secured?
if you lift the chipboard to fit the mats how will you secure it without damaging the mats!

i wont lift the chipboard, the heat mat will lay ontop of it, then the tiles. theres already a huge amount of insulation under the chipboard, i was just abit concerned about the heat directly on the chipboard..

am i worrying for nothing and it will be fine?

I actually think the tiler is mad for tiling onto chipboard. I just got to lay the mat

You need to seek advise from the manufacturer of the heat mat you propose to install.

The best solution to your problem would be the "Warmup" DWS loose wire system. I have just installed this system straight onto chipboard as per manufacturers instructions - http://www.warmup.co.uk/pdf-uk_DWS_V0906.pdf.phtml (page 7). The wire is only 3mm thick so should sit in the tile adhesive layer ok or in a very thin layer of screed then tile adhesive on top. Hope that helps.
