A friend of mine asked me to call round to reroute an armoured cable in his shed.I wired the house about 5 years ago so no problem I thought. When I arrived he told me it was in his mums house next door. Called into his mums and saw she had a cu change recently.Tripped the rcd to pull out cable but was surprised to hear the fridge still operating.Removed cover to investigate and realised that the guy who did the cu change had bypassed the rcd. Sockets protected by a 20A mcb and whats worse electric shower just on a 40A mcb.

I informed friend replaced cover and warned that immediate remedial action required. Now if something were to happen I'm the last sparks that was there.

This is an elderly widow who also cares for and adult handicapped son. I am disgusted with what this guy has done. How can he sleep at night. I believe there is a strong argument against self certification.

Any advice on my next step. Please

( Apologies for use of word handicapped I know it is not the correct term anymore, but I can't think of correct one at the moment)

If something ever happens these scheme providers will sit in the dock and say the member signed up to them on the condition that they conform to the standards. They will get off scott free.

That's what I can't understand

Makes you wonder if they actually realise whats going on at the coal face. All we're trying to do is uphold decent professional standards and abide by the law and regulations.

If you have to report him a 4th time, maybe you should make the letter more direct about the other 3 occassions and the fact that the person continues to install unsatisfactory solutions.

If there has to be a 4th time I would copy as many papers locally and nationally as I could think of, as well as the office of the deputy PM as after all it's cleggyboy that's ultimately responsible for this nonsense of a scheme.
I'm seriously thinking of a petition on the governments website.

Are you anywhere near me?

You have perfectly described Mondays work!

Rectifying a board described just like that except the 40A Shower is wired with 3 1.5T+E.

If you are near me could you please PM me the guys details.

Thanks

To all the kitchen fitters good diyers and general handy people who read posts on this site to gain experiance. If it is behond your experiance and abilities can you please get an electrician to do the work. There are plenty of self employed sparks in your area you can get in touch with on this website.
THEN YOU CAN SLEEP AT NIGHT.

What a t1t of a bloke,he could have at least told the person there was an earth issue and offered to return at a later date to rectify it,thus leaving her with power, surely it would take all of 5 minutes to at least identify the offending circuit,or even if it's a supply issue (which would be out of their hands anyway).

Sometimes it's necessary in my game to overcome the earth to determine which components offending in a particular circuit but this is industrial control where nobody can come to harm by it,as we inform those involved first.

Very poor stuff, the guy needs reporting to someone as that's very serious stuff, metal cases coming live etc.
