Just been directed here from someone I know for advice. Hoping you can help!

I've just moved in to a new house and there's a strange socket on the wall I can't identify and don't know what to do with!

Just wondered if anyone could tell me what it's for and if I can remove it easliy enough? Seem to be two small wires connected to it from the back. I'm VERY nervous around anything electrical...

It is one of these with the plug missing.

Ah! Thank you! Do you know how I would go around removing it? It's coming away from the wall anyway. Would I just turn the electricity off and cut the wires before taping them closed with electrical tape or is that just incredibly naive?

Don’t just tape up the wires.

Power off, safety first.
Disconnect from plate and put the wires into separate connector blocks. Cover with a one gang blank plate.

If there’s more than one cable going into the plate terminals, then keep the common connections together… ie red to red, black to black etc.
if in doubt, photograph the connections on the back of the plate and upload here for clarification.

Ideally, if the point is unused, you could disconnect the supply cable from wherever it’s fed from… but working that out where that is may be beyond DIY

Unfortunately, the OP's socket assembly isn't quite the same as Westward10's link. OP's is a standalone surface mounted version, while Westie's is to fit a standard single gang back box or surface box.
A blanking plate won't fit.
The two choices are to fit a single gang box with a blanking plate, or to disconnect the wiring at its source, which isn't really DIY territory.

Thanks so much for the responses! It seems a bit small for a standard blanking plate.

Would it work then if I put each wire into separate connector blocks, insulated both with electracal tape and then pushed back into the wall before sealing in the hole?

I take it you have already had the front off so can you show behind it to the back box?

I'll be over there later. The whole box is basically coming away from the wall. Ideally the wall will need re-done but I'm looking for a temporary fix just now just to get it good enough to throw some paint on. I'll take a pic to show the cables running in to the rear of the box.

I think I could manage to cut a bigger hole and install a box and subsequent blanking plate. I'd rather learn how to do it properly (or at least safely) and if I'm not confident I'll get a pro in. Meantime I'll fire a pic across later. Thank you all for your help. This is all uncharted territory to me as someone who has been renting a LONG time and has never needed to contemplate doing jobs like this himself!

Thanks to John Ward, this is what you see when you take the cover off:

Turn the power off first!!!

That's exactly what it is!

Yes. Main power is going off (as soon as I find where to do that) before I go anywhere near it...

A very good idea, especially as John Ward points out that (when connected to power) one of the two little rivets on the back (which hold the contacts in place) will be live!
At least the're recessed a bit! Ahh the good ond days 🤔
I think you're wise to be rid of it!
