disconnection times

would someone please explain the reasons for having a 0.4 second disconnection time and a 5 second disconnection time, why is there a big difference between the two readings

for circuits operating above 32A its a 5s and for circuits under 32A its 0.4s hope this helps

Dont think that helps at all, we probably all know those facts but a reasoning behind it would be good, we probably all know what the regs say but who can explain it a bit better

Davidjones the 0.4 sec dissconnection time is used when there is a rist of a person or livestock hanging of the end of it!!!! the 5 sec when the risk is minnimal such as distribution circuits.
If it was me i would only want a 0.4sec breakdance not 5 secs

That's very unfair. Their is nothing daft about the question whatsoever and their is nothing wrong with wanting to know the reason why.

If you ever get in depth with electrical or electronic engineering then learning how to derive formulas etc from first principles is essential and that can include things like the qusetion raised here.
