having read on other posts about people having split phase farm supplies, id like to be educated as to what they are, and why they exist.

basically a centre tapped secondary winding gives you 2 hot legs and a neutral/earth - for USA thats 120-0-120 for Uk thats 230-0-230
or for site work(reduced low-voltage) 55-0-55

i think the economics are that that when the loads are balanced on the two hot legs -the neutral current is zero and the 2 hot legs carry half the current of an equivalent 2-wire SP supply
