I had an old style metre with the spinning wheel that made a loud squeak. Reported on line to my DNO, SSE saying I was scared it might catch fire or explode. They came out and replaced very quickly. Obviously there are some key words to hit for a prompt response. 😎 Get it checked by your DNO.

'Connection seems hot' and 'wisps of smoke' also work well in my experience.

I am going to put another vote in for a shower pump.

where in the West Midlands are you?
I may be able to pop in and clear this up for a beer if you are nearby.

sure it’s not the shower pump as you couldn’t hear it in the garage from where the shower is at the rear off the house but your welcome to call in if your passing and I’m more Staffordshire burntwood
