Hi guys,

Im looking to further my career in the electrical industry and have been looking for quite some time into the HNC course. I have a grade B in intermediate mathematics at GCSE level from school and found that I sailed through my electricians course with regards to the theory and mathematical side of it. My mathematical knowledge is a bit ropey at the moment but at present i am working through engineering mathematics books and HNC books to get myself ready for september 2013. I guess what im trying to say is that im a little worried about attempting this course as all ive heard is negativity from people saying 'you need a level maths' and 'your not going to cope with the level of theory' or 'you need a level maths first' etc...
But I feel that im a very hard worker and am willing to put more than 100% effort into it so if anyone on here is feeling the same as me or has some reassuring advice or knowledge from previous or present experiences that would be much appreciated.

If people want to put the frighteners up you then take it and use it as motivation, the only reason people say stuff like this is because they are getting left behind and feel they need to put people down, what are you planning on doing, electrical engineering ?

Go for it. If you have the enthusiasm you will pass. Like all courses it is just hard work and motivation. Good luck-with the right units it can be a career boost.

hello, I too sailed through my electricians course and the 2391 testing and inspect. I started the HNC at the begining of september this year, I must admit although the basics are the same as bits you have covered already with the 2330, the HNC is a big step up maths wise and everyone looking to take it should be aware of that. But its not rocket science, as long as you get your head down and practice the number crunching, youll be fine! I can give you some subjects to look at before you start?

The maths is'nt hard, yes more complex than 2330 etc. but it's only basic calculus etc. (get the A level guides). Solving the Goldbach conjecture or Reimann is hard. There's alot of workers out there with a chip on their shoulder about education, but ultimately you want to do it and it's not going to actually do you any harm! The fact you are chosing to improve yourself and study very worthy, I've gotten jobs purely on this alone!

Best of luck

Dont want to dampen you spirits, but have you done the Btech NC? (aka ONC) If not you will need to do this first, as the HNC is the 2 year bolt on to the end of the NC. 2 years to NC, then 2 more to HNC, so 4 years to HNC.

Cheers...........Howard

I agree completely. The ONC would be useful and help a lot with the preparation for the mathematics. Also it is an excellent qualification in it's own right. Also at the same time in the evenings doing the new C&G 2400 will be a bonus as well.
