Hey everyone,

I'm new here! My name's Matt, I'm 26, I recently left working on helicopters as a Avionic/Electrical technician for 7 years to go more into the DNO, low voltage substation side of the electrical industry and I'm enjoying it so far.

I have 2393 building regs and 2382 17th edition, now I realise totally that doesn't make me a real electrician but was wondering if anyone think it's possible for me to take on a bit of domestic work? I really don't like sitting on my butt at home at the weekends/evenings when I'm not doing my full time job (I think I need an excuse to get away from the girlfriend) :D

I was thinking of registering with a competent persons scheme and buying a Multi-Function tester. (I have every other kind of tool that I think I'd need to happily get by) I also have a fair amount of experience in house bashing and even get compliments on my super smooth plastering from the girls :P

The other alternative would be to try and get some work with someone else who's a lot more experienced. The only problem is I know of 2 electricians and they are total cowboys.

I'm just a bit dubious of shelling out over £400 on a competent persons scheme and another £400 or so on a tester.

Any advice would be really helpful and much appreciated.

Cheers guys!

Don't forget the cost of public liability insurance and don't forget to register with the tax office. If you are experienced and competent then why not ? If I was looking for an excuse to get away from the girlfriend though, I'm not sure I would be working. An extra girlfriend maybe .......

Andy 2 girlfriends you must be a glutton for punishment.

Pffft I wasn't talking about me. I haven't got the energy or nerves for that kind of lark. An enthusiastic lad of 26 though ? He should be out drinking and sniffing skirts if he's bored, not doing domestic work. Now that is a glutton for punishment :D

Ha thanks Andy, I know what's good for me though! I get enough hassle off 1 female.

So all that's necessary is to:

register on companies house
get public liability insurance
register with a competent persons scheme
get a tester with calibration cert

It seems a little too straight forward :/

One thing you've missed off your list though Matt, Customers it can be easier said than done getting work and getting a fair price for the service you provide. There are a lot of established Electricians out there struggling to earn a living wage due to the saturation of the domestic sector.

So all that's necessary is to:

register on companies house . only if you want to form a LTD. company
get public liability insurance. yep. 2 million.
register with a competent persons scheme. not initially. do non=notifiable jobs for starters. then consider this in 6 months time.
get a tester with calibration cert

It seems a little too straight forward :/

my thoughts in red.
