Hi there.

I’m hoping for some advice.

I currently run a small limited company that provides IT services, both commercial and domestic so I carry out a lot of data & fibre cabling work.

Over the last couple of years I’ve found that a lot of clients / customers ask me about doing electrical work too. In these instances I point them towards a highly rated contractor in the area, usually registered with NICEIC.

The only electrical things I will do at the moment is PA Testing as it means I can test equipment while it’s being isntalled etc. For this, I went on a short course, sat a short exam and got a certification at the end.

While that’s the only work I carry out, I have however got myself clued up on the regulations and will take note of any faults I see (referring to NAPIT Codebreakers for severity) and advise clients to get an electrician in.

I own an MFT and do use it often for PAT as it gives me more granular control than my regular tester. I also use it to ensure that data cabinets are adequately earthed and RCD protected. While these aren’t things I do officially, I do these tests just to give some peace of mind to myself when leaving new equipment installed.

So overall I’m wondering what certifications courses etc I need to do to be able to carry out electrical work and certify it etc. I primarily expect to be doing small things like repairs but the odd distribution board and eICR is definitely something I’d like to be able to do.

As a safety note, safe isolation is something I am used to carrying out as well.

For the record, I’m under no illusion that it’s going to be quick and just the case of sitting an exam etc, I just want to know what I need to do as I cannot find any clear info online. But of course, a full apprenticeship is not an option for me which I thought would be the obvious route.

I have good PL, PI and EL insurance and the motivation to want to learn, take my time etc.

TL;DR
I’m an IT contractor that does a little bit of electrical testing. What do I need to do to carry out and certify more involved work?
