Hi All,

I am a fully qualified electrician c&g 2330 + 17th edition

What i'm trying to get to the bottom of is how i go about signing off my own work. (IE i work for a firm but say i have a family member who is putting in a conservatory and for arguments sake i need to add a new circuit in there. They're landlord has asked for a certificate)

I've spoke to colleagues who said if you held the old 2391 then your qualified to do this. This course has been scrapped now and replaced with the 2394 & 2395?

I then spoke to a member of the technical team at NIC EIC, who said that before any work was carried out in a domestic then the local authorities building control would have to be contacted.

If the local authority then deemed you competent then you would be able to fill out a certificate as in BS7671.

For commercial property the same above however it would not be down to the local authority but the duty holder responsible for the building. If this person deemed you competent then you would be able to complete a certificate.

I would just like some clarity on this as i would like to be able to sign off foreigners if the scope of work deemed a installation certificate. Is it even worth doing the 2394 and 2395?

Not all work in domestic is notifiable. What the NIC have said is misleading to say the least.

There are lots of previous threads on this subject. Have a search on here.

thanks for taking the time to reply i've looked at many threads and find the information conflicting.

I would just like some clarity and comfort that i know whatever job i complete in my own time i can certify.

To comply with BS 7671 you must certify all installation work that you do, with the exception of like-for-like replacement which is maintenance rather than installation.

Yawn.

1. Notify HMRC of your second income

2. Buy PL ins

3. Notify vehicle insurance of need for business cover.

4. Buy tester and get it calibrated

5. Check employement T&C's to check you won't get sacked for doing work on the side

6. Download Part P document, read and understand it

7. Get BYB and yellow OSG & copy of EWSR

8. Get cards printed

9. Get quotation templates set up

10. Get Invoice templates set up

11. Open savings account for your tax and NI bills to be paid later

12. anything I've forgotten.

You can certify (issue an EIC/MW) any job as long as you are competant to do so,you do not need to be a member of any scam to do this.
You are confusing issueing an EIC/MW cert with 'signing off'. Under part P certain domestic installations need to be notified to building control. If you are a member of a competant persons scheme then you can notify those jobs for a couple of quid through them. If not then technically BC need to inspect your notifyable work and will charge considerably for this. This is what most people call 'signing off'.
Have a read of the part P document online and understand what work requires 'signing off',but regardless of that issueing a 'cert' is still required and has nothing to do with part p.

I doubt if you'll get a definitive answer as all LABC's don't play to the same criteria. Many of these LABC's don't want to, or are incapable of taking any responsibility, they basically leave that responsibility to the Part P scam providers, that in reality don't take any responsibility either... With some LABC's you can register yourself with that LABC as a competent electrician by taking all your original C&G qualifications along with any supporting evidence like a JIB Gold Card Approved Electrician/Electrician etc...
