Everything you need now it's so easy to get, gaffers were tight, they wouldn't let you have more than a couple of penny washers.
Now it's a packetof that,a box of this,I've got so much tack in the van now,I can't be bothered to look for what I want I just book it out again, how times have changed.
Well I was a lad I was an apprentice to a elderly gentleman who always
looked & dressed immaculate,always wore a tie,polished black shoes

He always listened to The archers before we got out the van, which was a bit late at around 1.50pm,always made a fresh pot of tea with his tea caddy & stove,in the van.
He once drove 32 miles in the firms van in 3rd gear,I was only a lad,& too afraid to tell him to change to 4th,ha ha them were the days.

There is an old boy plumber who does some work for a builder I do work for....he rocks up in a shirt and tie everyday without fail.

Had to go to Screwfix at the weekend, I needed some wood screws, got me thinking about the old days.
Now these screws came in a nice metal box all differing sizes, I was wondering how many of the older fraternity remember when they were lads following an Electrician around different jobs, wire a socket here, a light there, now the bloke I worked with most of my time had an old Army gas mask bag, and this was his bits and bobs store, I can remember him saying, as an example Pete I need 6 x 3/4 no 8 screws, I would have to tip the bag out and hunt around for the screws, there was all sorts in this bag cable clips, machine screws, staple (for bell wire the old lags will remember them), grommets, blooming everything in this bag, it was how he collected all this stuff that amused me, he would remove a switch, and chuck all the bits he could salvage in this bag. Just wondered if anyone else has experienced similar things during their Apprenticeship.
Sounds like my tool bag, it all goes in.

Mine kept all the tools in a carpenters skep, a large jute bag which opened flat on the ground. All the slot head screws were new though, all in their little boxes in a crate, lots of very nice shiney brass ones.

Well in all fairness I think that is where the influence comes from . It certainly did with me .
I was lapping side valve engine valves in and repairing dynamos at eight years old.
One reason we didn't bin the broken hacksaw blades lol.
Haha yeah me too, with my dad making stuff from scratch or repairing stuff it got me into it so if something broken I have the mentality of "it's already broken. I can't break it more" so stuff gets taken apart. Bits saved for later. Thank God I only live in a small house. It'd be jammed if I had more space lol
