You must use a BB filter on all sockets or you will get a hissing noise from the socket without the filter. Thats what the filter does it filters out the hiss.

Are you using filters on all sockets?

Many thanks to Phil D and others for help here - it was the splitter. I replaced the one I'd been using with the old handset I using for testing and that did the trick. (Didn't think there was anything in them to go wrong).
